Facebook Launches new CatchUp App for audio calling02 June, 2020
Social media giant Facebook already possessed a Messenger and WhatsApp calling app.Now Facebook is planning to expand its portfolio by including a new calling app called CatchUp. What is significance of this move in today’s time and how does the customer benefit by this move ?
CatchUp is an audio-only app that has the facility to allow up to 8 people to make group calls.
It is not mandatory to have a facebook account for using CatchUp. The app can access your phone’s contact list after you give permission.
It also lets you see the availability of your friends and family making it easier to connect with them. The app allows you to set up group calls with up to 8 people.
The app let users to set their status as “ready to talk” or “offline”.
CatchUp is not introduced officially as it is still being developed by facebook NPE (New Product Experimentation team
“Keeping in touch with friends and family is important, especially during this time of physical distancing. Messaging and video calling are great ways to send a quick update or connect with someone face-to-face, but speaking to someone over the phone offers a unique balance of both convenience and personal connection”.
The idea behind the new app is to coordinate call timings with friends and family members and makes it easier for friends and family in the U.S. to coordinate voice calls with up to 8 people.
It allows the user to see when your friends are online and ready to receive your call.
The app also provides the functionality to let you join in-progress group calls as well. Indeed catching up has never been this easy.

Now feel free to call your close friends and family. As per the ‘New York Times’, during the covid pandemic, phone call volume has increased more as compared to internet usage.
This new app will let your friends and family member know if you are available to take calls or not in the “Ready to Talk” section.
Studies found that people don’t hesitate to their call friends and family more frequently as they don’t know when they are available to talk.
They are afraid of reaching them at an inconvenient time. Facebook’s NPE Team developers have tried to address this problem while developing this new app.
Also with the capacity of connecting up to 8 people together in a voice call by checking their availability makes it more convenient specially for those who feel reluctant in calling someone because they fear of disturbing at the wrong time.
It will enable people in demarcate a common time for calls and the best part is, users don’t need to have a facebook account to use it. This new platform will use the contact list of your phone.
However, facebook has mentioned in a blog that NPE apps are experimental and the features are continuously evolving.
